P E N N Y
Penny Smith was born in Sri Lanka then moved to live in Calcutta where she went to school; she later moved to the UK where she attended the Penzance School of Art, and then the Central School of Art in London (now Central and St Martins), where she studied design.
By total coincidence Penny met up with film director Ken Russell through a friend. It was by pure luck that Penny joined Ken’s creative team and went on to work on his projects; Ken had a brilliant imagination and his pre film production meetings were inspiring. Over the years Penny has worked on many TV dramas and film.
Penny returned to her art in 2017 with an exhibition at ‘The Over-Seas League', Green Park, in London, which was put together by friend and designer Debby Hurst. Another exhibition shortly followed at the 'Indian High Commission' in Mayfair, London, where Miriam Margoylese opened the exhibition at the private view - 'The High Commission' arranged that Penny exhibited her art free of charge as they always help artists with a connection to India.
Penny’s art can be described as a mix of expressionism and fauvism but she has her own unique style. Penny’s creations change yearly as she explores other avenues and mediums; her inspiration of colour and form comes from her time in India. Penny paints with vivid strong colours and sometimes highlights with 22 carat gold leaf, she also often works with collage using handmade papers sourced from India, Nepal, and Japan, which give texture and depth to her paintings.
Penny visits Jaipur in India as often as possible and stays with friends Lilly and Mehendra Sighn who have turned their ancestral home into a charming boutique hotel; recently Lilly has employed 2 local artists to paint the ceilings in exquisite Rajasthan historic designs. Penny finds her visits uplifting as the Rajasthan light is exquisite and the atmosphere of the little hotel is stunning.
